Happy 150th Birthday Kansas!
On Wednesday, June 15th, Fort Bissel is hosting a special day to celebrate Kansas' birthday. They will have speakers and activities all day long (look to the local papers for more information). They've asked us to participate and we will be making stepping stones here at the greenhouse. This is a great activity for "kids" of all ages. Call for more information! |

| | Chinch bugs | Chinch Bugs in Buffalograss
We are finding dead areas in buffalograss in many yards. I would like to have a definite answer, but our "best guess" is a late chinch bug infestation with late fall damage
occurring. This damage usually occurs around the 4th of July so we will need to watch for dead spots
occurring around this time.
Adult chinch bugs are about one-fifth of an inch long and black with white wings folded over their backs. The chinch bugs insert their slender beak into the grass and suck the plant juices. As the chinch bug sucks the plant juices, it releases a toxin that causes yellowish to brownish patches in turf. Typical injury appears as spreading patches of brown, dead grass. This pest is a sunshine-loving insect and seldom attacks grass in a dense shady area. Discolored areas caused by chinch bug feeding that are in open sunlight several hours daily may be "hot spots" for chinch bug damage. Because they can fly, it is difficult to keep an area free of chinch bugs if they are emerging from neighboring lawns, golf courses or nearby croplands.
Scout turf on sunny days by slowly sliding your foot through the sod and watching for the bugs to crawl across your shoe. You can also determine infestations by using a large coffee can or gallon can with both ends removed. Press one end of the can about 2 or 3 inches into the soil, fill with soapy water, and watch for about 5 minutes. If chinch bugs are present, they will float to the surface. (This test will also bring molecrickets to the surface) It is very important to check areas where the yellowish spots and the green grass meet in several different locations.
Treatment For Chinch Bug
There is NO pre-treatment for this problem. If you find chinch bugs, treat with High Yield Turf Ranger.

Grassy stickers and sandburs have germinated!
Grassy weeds can be controlled with
High Yield Grass KIller. This is considered a SELECTIVE herbicide as it kills only grassy weeds. It works great in perennial gardens, it will kill grass without killing desirable plants such as iris, and it kills grassy stickers.
For sandburs,
Fertilome Weed Out with Trimec will kill this broadleaf weed in any grass type. But, you need to do this before the burrs start to set on. |
