The Garden PathMother's Day 2011

We are almost at the frost-free date of May 10th, keep in mind; this is the average date, not a guarantee. With the colder night time temperatures and the frost alerts, many are waiting to plant gardens, I am too!
One other thing to observe during this cool period is the slow results we see when herbicides are used. Weed killers work when the plant absorbs the chemical during the day and then the plant moves the product through it's system as it grows during the night. With the cool nights, this process is very slow. If you have applied herbicide...be patient, allow the process to work.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call upon me any time.  I look forward to seeing you in the upcoming weeks.
Happy Mother's Day.
Sincerely,

Sherry Robinson

Bedding Plants in the Greenhouse
Zinnias in bloom in the greenhouse.
Planting A Garden

Plant selection is the #1 fun part of gardening. With so many great colors to choose, it can be hard to decide. The 1st consideration is how much sunshine the bed receives. If you are a first time gardener, zinnias, vincas, and petunias are good choices to start with. They  take full sun to partial shade conditions.

Add Fertilome Gardeners Special granular fertil-
izer to the bed to feed the plants for up to a month. After the plants are in, I add Weed & Grass Preventer to keep the manual weeding at a minimum.  Top the soil with cottonseed hulls as a mulch to  further prevent weeds and retain moisture.

My May Fertilome Product Pick

Fertilome Water Soluble Blooming & Rooting is mixed with water and used 1x a week. This used to be called Tomato food and works great, but it also feeds hanging baskets and containers. This product really encourages root production and blossom production. Click on the link above, it will take you to the Fertilome Website.

Current Soil Temperature...

46o    (STILL Hasn't changed!)

We should be seeing warmer soil temperatures in the upcoming weeks. I'm hearing reports of slow progress in gardens with potatoes and other early crops. This is to be expected with these soil temperatures, just be patient, there really is nothing to do. Do NOT put down mulch yet, it will keep the soil temps down even longer.
